–Reading
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Yes, it’s true. I read Anne again. I just can’t help myself. Once spring begins in earnest, my heart longs for Prince Edward Island, or at least for the joy of reading about that magical place. Something that can’t be said for most books: Anne always brings me unparalleled happiness and joy in life and love.
The Borrowers Aloft and The Borrowers Avenged by Mary Norton
I finished this charming series with a twinge of disappointment. Disappointment that the books were over, but also disappointment with the ending. Apparently Mary Norton intended to write more books about these unique, tiny characters, but she never got around to it. So, the series ends with several of the main characters at odds with each other and leaves many main questions unanswered. Very sad.
The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe
This is such a great book. Very interesting look at what life was like in the 1950s in New York City for career girls. It was quite astonishing how it was a given that as soon as one got married, she must quit her job immediately. So many of these girls didn’t have career goals at all. Most of them came to the big city with nothing in mind but finding an eligible man. This book charts the paths of several such girls and follows their heartbreaks and discoveries while navigating through life, based on the real-life experiences of writer Rona Jaffe and her friends.
